A 27 year old, woman from Alabama who was shot in the stomach during an altercation, is being charged with death of her unborn child.
Marshae Jones was charged with manslaughter and released from jail after posting a $50,000 bond. Marshae was reportedly five months pregnant when she was shot by another woman outside of a Dollar General, who walked free. The fight was over the unborn child's father and led to 23-year-old Ebony Jemison to shoot Marshae in the stomach.
Police say she is being held responsible because she started the fight that led to the shooting and failed to remove herself from harm's way.
"The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby, Pleasant Grove, Alabama, police Lt. Danny Reid said. "It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby."
"When a five-month pregnant woman initiates a fight and attacks another person, I believe some responsibility lies with her as to any injury to her unborn child. That child is dependent on it's mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn't seek out unnecessary physical altercations."
If you didn't know, In may Alabama lawmakers passed a bill banning abortions in the state at any stage of the pregnancy unless of course the mother's physical or mental health is in jeopardy.
"This is how people--especially women of color -- are already being punished & having their pregnancies criminalized," the National Abortion association of abortion providers, said in a statement.
"Indeed, Alabama is one of the most dangerous places in the country for a Black woman trying to carry her pregnancy to term, and this prosecution is just one more attack on the basic human rights and dignity of Black women in our state, If this prosecution is allowed to proceed, it will not be much of a step to come up with a way to prosecute a woman who has an abortion."
